Where To Buy Golf Bags

Plenty of sporting good stores selling golf bags, but we find that some stores have a much better selection and price than others. We recommend that you do your shopping at:

  • Amazon
  • Golfsmith (announced in Nov. 2016 they are closing most of their stores)

Based on our experience, these two stores offer a great selection of bags of all types and brands. And, they have something to meet any budget. Other than that, you may want to check if there is a local golf shop in your area, but remember to compare prices at the two stores we recommend above before you buy anything.

Types of Golf Bags

As you compare all of the options on the market, you will notice that there are four distinct types of golf bags that you can buy. If you’re not sure which type you will need, then let’s look at the differences to make that decision easier for you. The four types are:

  • Carry bags
  • Cart bags
  • Staff/Tour bags
  • Stand bags

If you want something that it lightweight and that is designed for only a few of your clubs, then a carry bag is the choice for you. Usually this type is referred to as a Sunday bag by most golfers. It is designed to be carried, does not come with a stand, and typically only has enough room for the bare necessities – a few clubs, balls and tees. This is not something that you’d want for your everyday solution. Think of it more as a “just in case” bag that you keep in the trunk for those times when you’re not expecting to be out on the course, but the opportunity presents itself and you don’t want to pass it up. This type usually only weighs around two pounds empty.

If you plan on leaving your bag on the golf cart, or if you’re going to use one of those push/pull carts, then you definitely want to get yourself a cart bag. This type is larger than the carry bags and stand bags because it is designed with all these extra features that the others don’t have to offer you. Some common things that you’ll see include pockets for valuables, cooler pockets, and large divider systems. They are the most feature-packed bags that you’ll find on the market. You see a lot of serious hobbyists with these, and I definitely recommend this type if you intend to spend a lot of time out on the course. Expect one of these to weigh in at around six to seven pounds when empty.

Unless you go pro, you’re probably not going to want to bother with a staff bag (also called a tour bag). These things are super heavy and the professionals probably use them because they don’t have to lug them around! But seriously, these things are designed to stay strapped to a cart all the time since they are so large and heavy (most of the time they are around 10 pounds empty!). This is also the most expensive type of golf bag on the market.

If you’re the type of golfer who prefers to carry their own clubs, then a stand bag is the perfect choice for you. Just like the name implies, it comes with a durable stand so that you can prop it up on the ground when you’re ready to tee off. The legs are not intrusive and basically just pop out to prop it up and then they easily retract once you pick the bag back up to carry it to the next hole. This type is larger than a carry bag but smaller than a cart bag. You can put a full set of clubs in one of these and they usually have the top divider systems. This type typically weighs somewhere around four to five pounds empty, but some models are even more lightweight than that.

What To Look For In A Golf Bag (Common Features)

Once you know the type of golf bag that you’re shopping for, it is a good idea to consider which features are most important to you. As you compare the different brands and models that are available on the market, you will notice that you can find pretty much any feature you want in any type of bag. But availability does vary from one model to the next. So, let’s take a look at some of the features that we consider to be the most important and you’ll be able to determine what makes a good golf bag for you.

Weight

If you intend on carrying your gear out on the course, then weight should be one of your primary concerns. The last thing that you want to do is wrench your back out there just from carrying around your clubs. Even if you intend to use a push or pull cart, you will still want to go with something that is not too heavy. We suggest going with the most lightweight bag that you can find that has all of the other features that you want in one of these.

Pockets

Though you might be tempted to think that you won’t need too many pockets, you’ll soon discover that you need room for things other than just balls and tees (like your golf rangefinder). Unless you’re doing your golfing in a place like Las Vegas where rain is rare, you’ll want to have a pocket for some rainwear or maybe even a lightweight jacket. If so, look for one with an apparel pocket. You’ll also likely want a place to put your wallet and your cell phone so that they are not in your pant pockets. That means you’ll need a valuables pocket. You probably don’t want to go without water either, so you’ll likely want a bag with a beverage holster or sleeve. Some even have a cooler pocket where you can store more than one drink. Maybe it rains a lot where you golf and you have to take an umbrella out with you, which means you’ll need something with an umbrella holder pocket.

Rain Cover

Some of the more high end options come with a rain hood or cover, which is good for protecting your gear from a rain shower. Even if your preferred bag doesn’t come with one, you can usually buy one separate to fit your bag.

Towel Ring

Most of the time, you’ll find a towel clip, loop or ring on the side. You need this because it is an easy way to keep a towel handy for wiping debris off your gear. Since the exact feature varies (clip, look or ring), just look out for the type that you prefer.

Divider System

The number of dividers varies from one model to the next, so pay attention to the number of divider system to ensure that it meets you needs. Some bags have no divider system at all. Choosing a bag with a divider system is the best way to ensure that you’re not wasting time fumbling in your bag to find the right club. It is common to find cart bags with 14-way dividers so that you have a dedicated spot for every club. It is important to not that only the higher end bags have a full-length divider system. The rest only have a top divider system, which means that the shafts of the clubs will all touch each other in the bag.

Putter Well

Not all bags have this, but a putter well is a separate area for your putter. The benefit here is that it prevents the putter from damaging the shafts of the other clubs, and it keeps the putter head protected as well.

Travel Hood

If you intend on taking a golf bag on a plane, then you will want something that has a travel hood on it. Or, you can choose something that will easily fit in your luggage.

Carry Bag Features

Check out the straps to determine if you like the fit or not. Some come in a backpack-style while others come with a single messenger-bag style strap. Pay attention to the padding in the straps to see if it is adequate. If you might be placing the bag on the wet ground, look for one that has a water resistant feature. Do you want a divider system? Because not all carry bags have this feature.

Stand Bags Features

For this type, you should check out the stand mechanism and see if you like the way that it works. Since this type can support a full set of clubs, consider looking for one with backpack-style straps to give your back the most support. Also go with something that has good padding on the straps. Check the height of the bag when it is standing to see if it is too tall or too short for you.

Cart Bags Features

For this type, pay attention to the handle on the bag to ensure that it is something that will be comfortable to use and that will withstand plenty of years on the course. Look to see if there are enough pockets and storage spaces for all of your gear. And where are all those storage spaces and pockets located, because you need to be able to easily reach them when the bag is on the cart. Also check to see what the putter access is like.

Overall overall rating: 4.7 Stars (4.7 / 5)

Nike Golf makes a lot of great gear, and this is one of their bags that is no exception that. I really like how feature-packed this one is, even though it has an affordable price and you wouldn’t really expect to get all of this for the money.

What we like about this one:

  • a total of nine pockets – including a water resistant valuables pocket
  • comes with a matching rain hood
  • very lightweight at just 5.5 pounds
  • build seems very durable
  • mesh ventilated back pad for those sweaty afternoons
  • nice padding on the double strap system

One of the most impressive things about this one is that it comes with the matching rain hood. At this price point, you don’t really expect to get get a rain hood when you’re looking at cheap golf stand bags. And the durable build is also unexpected for this price. Those things make this one great buy and an incredible value for the money right now. Plus, it is our top pick for the lightest golf stand bag that’s worth the price.

What we don’t like about this one:

  • 8-section divider system
  • can only fit 2 cans in the cooler pocket

Not only does the divider system only have eight sections, but it doesn’t go all the down the bags length either. Obviously, you can’t get those features at this price, but that is still one of my complaints. Why? Because the clubs can tangle up together in the bottom of the bag.

If you’re on a budget, then I think you will be really happy with this choice. But if you can afford to spend a little more, then you can get something with a better divider system for sure.

Callaway 2016 Fusion Stand Bag Review

Weight: 4.8 Stars (4.8 / 5) Value: 5.0 Stars (5.0 / 5) Features: 4.9 Stars (4.9 / 5)

Overall overall rating: 4.9 Stars (4.9 / 5)

Available in several different color combos, there is a lot to like about this new model from Callaway. It actually has a lot in common with the Nike model listed above, however there are some better features on this one that you might be interested in checking out.

What we like about this one:

  • cart bag-style top
  • 14-section divider system for all the clubs
  • full length dividers for clubs
  • lots of pockets
  • very stable stand system for extra support & stability
  • lots of padding on the straps
  • can easily work with a push cart
  • only weighs 5.5 pounds

As you can see, this one has a LOT going for it. Not only does it have dividers for each club, but they are full length which means no tangling of the clubs! The straps on this one are probably one of the most comfortable that I’ve ever come across. They have a foam core with an ergonomic design and then this soft mesh extra padding that really makes it comfortable to wear while walking the course. And it has the standard hip pad that most of the bags like that come with. One of the surprising features here is that it has an e-trolley base system, which means that you can easily use this model with a push cart (if that interests you).

What we don’t like about this one:

  •  no rain cover or hood

Honestly, it took a while for me to find anything negative to say about this Callaway model. I mean, it is honestly one of the best golf stand bags for the price because you get pretty much every feature that you could dream of, except for a rain hood or cover.

If you want one of the most durable golf stand bags on the market, then I definitely suggest this Callaway model for your gear. It’s made by one of the top brands in the industry and it really does offer you a lot for the money.

TaylorMade Purelite Stand Bag Review

taylormade pure lite
Our ratings:
Weight: 5.0 Stars (5.0 / 5) Value: 5.0 Stars (5.0 / 5) Features: 4.8 Stars (4.8 / 5)

Overall overall rating: 4.9 Stars (4.9 / 5)

Where to buy: Amazon

If you’re on a budget and looking for the best golf stand bags under $200 – $300, then this TaylorMade model is a good choice. It’s affordable, made by a brand known for quality, and it has a lot of great features for the money. It is actually our top pick for the best golf bag for beginners because it has a good low price and a lot of features, which makes it a good value for the money.

What we like about this one:

  • designed to be crush resistant
  • shoulder strap has good padding and ergonomic design
  • base is cart-compatible
  • comes with a rain hood
  • anti-split stand mechanism
  • weighs just 4.8 pounds empty
  • a total of 10 pockets (including umbrella sleeve)
  • 5-way opening at top
  • two full-length dividers

As you can see, there are lot of features packed into this lightweight model. One of my favorites things about this one is that it weighs less than the models listed above. It’s the most durable golf stand bag I’ve seen that is lightweight at less than 5 pounds total weight when empty. It’s also nice that this is a very versatile golf bag since it has a base that is compatible with carts. The two full-length dividers are also nice, but could be better.

Check Price on Amazon

What we don’t like about this one:

  • only a 5-way opening instead of 14
  • only 2 full-length dividers
  • no cooler pocket

Though I really like this one, there are still some room for improvements here. While it does have a beverage pocket, a small cooler pocket would be preferable to me. I’d also prefer a bag with individual spots for the clubs instead of the 5-way opening and two full length dividers.

But all things considered, this model does still have some great features if you can overlook these minor grievances.

Titleist Lighweight Stand Bag Review

Titleist Lightweight Stand
Our ratings:
Weight: 4.8 Stars (4.8 / 5) Value: 4.7 Stars (4.7 / 5) Features: 4.7 Stars (4.7 / 5)

Overall overall rating: 4.7 Stars (4.7 / 5)

Where to buy: Amazon

If you’re looking for something made by one of the best golf bag brands in the business, then this Titleist model makes a great choice for you. The brand is known for making high quality golf equipment and this ultra-durable golf stand bag is no exception to that. Just one touch and you can tell that this thing was built to last you for several years of playing the game. Of course, it might not be the best choice for someone on a budget or the person looking for the best golf bag under $100 (carry bags are usually the cheapest), but this one makes a great addition to your gear and should last you for a really long time.

What we like about this one:

  • made by one of the best brands in the business
  • construction feels very durable
  • come with rain hood
  • weather-resistant zipper
  • two full-length dividers
  • good padding on the straps
  • weighs just over 5 pounds

Though this one could have a few more pockets and dedicated spaces for clubs, overall I still feel like you get a lot for the money here. True to it’s name, the weight is just over 5 pounds at approximately 5.5 pounds when empty. And I like that it not only comes with a rain hood but that the zippers are weather resistant.

Check Price on Amazon

What we don’t like about this one:

  • only a 4-way divider system at the top
  • only six pockets

Personally, I’d expect this one to have more than a four-way top divider system for my clubs. This isn’t a deal breaker for me, but I just expect more from it. Likewise with the number of pockets. Basically, I just feel like there should be more here, but the bottom line is that it’s still a great choice if you don’t mind these things.

Nike Sport Lite Carry Bag Review

Nike Sport Lite Carry Bag
Our ratings:
Weight: 5.0 Stars (5.0 / 5) Value: 5.0 Stars (5.0 / 5) Features: 4.8 Stars (4.8 / 5)

Overall overall rating: 4.9 Stars (4.9 / 5)

Where to buy: Amazon

If you’re going to be walking the course most of the time, then we suggest looking at the lightest golf bags in 2017 so that you’re not lugging around too much weight out there. Some of the best golf carry bags for walkers sometimes function as stand bags, but not all carry bags come with a stand. Instead, they are characterized by being lightweight and designed for carrying on your back or slinging over your shoulder. If you take a look at the Nike Air Sport Stand Bag listed up above, you will notice that it is very similar to this one. In fact, they share a lot of the same features except that this one is lighter.

What we like about this one:

  • weighs around 4 pounds
  • comes with a stand
  • comes with a matching rain hood
  • good padding on the double strap system
  • 5-way top divider system
  • two full-length dividers
  • good amount of pockets

As you can see, at around 4 pounds for the weight, this one is very lightweight! And if you’re going to be using a carry bag, that is definitely what you want out of your gear. What’s nice about this one is that it also comes with the stand, so you can still prop it up while you’re playing. For the money, this one is a great buy at this price point.

Check Price on Amazon

What we don’t like about this one:

  • exterior is not water resistant
  • only a 5-way top divider instead of 14
  • no insulated beverage cooler pocket

These are really the only negative things we can find about this bag. Of them, the lack of a beverage cooler pocket is the one that I find most annoying. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem drinking room temperature water, but if it’s a hot summer day then I want a cold drink. The exterior not being water resistant isn’t a huge deal since the bag has a stand, but it would still be a nice feature. However, this is one of the cheapest golf bags on the market that I’ve seen, so you can’t expect to have all the features that you want at this low sales price.

Best Golf Bags for Carts

If you’re in the market for the best golf bag for pull carts and push carts (or just the back of the regular ole golf cart), then you’ll find that you have a lot of great options to choose from right now. Keep in mind that this type tends to weigh a little more than the other types, but you should still try to go with something that is lightweight since the pushing and pulling can strain your back. Of course, these types of bags are also good for keeping on the golf cart as you ride from hole to hole, and then weight isn’t quiet as important.

Our ratings:

Overall overall rating: 4.9 Stars (4.9 / 5)

Where to buy: Amazon

As you may already know, Sun Mountain is one of the top brands for golf bags and that’s why this model made our list. That being said, overall we don’t love all of the Sun Mountain gear but we do really like this one.

What we like about this one:

  • fourteen individual, full-length dividers
  • comes with rain hood
  • very durable construction
  • weighs approximate 6.7 pounds
  • easy access to pockets when secured thanks to the cart strap pass-through
  • two valuables pockets
  • several color design choices
  • pockets always accessible when on a riding cart
  • a total of 9 pockets
  • works well on riding cart
  • three utility handles on the top

I love that this bag has two pockets for valuables and that one of them is large enough to hold a range finder. And the handles make it really easy to move the bag from the car’s trunk over to the cart. And unlike some models, the pockets are always accessible on it when it is on the cart, which is really nice.

Check Price on Amazon

What we don’t like about this one:

  • only room for 2 cans in cooler pocket

Honestly, this is the only complaint that I have with this one. But at the end of the day, if you’re on a riding cart then you can just take along a separate cooler and you’re all set. Other than that, there is honestly nothing else that I have found to complain about with this one.

Titleist Lightweight Cart Bag Review

Titleist Lightweight Cart Bag Review
Our ratings:
Weight: 4.9 Stars (4.9 / 5) Value: 5.0 Stars (5.0 / 5) Features: 4.8 Stars (4.8 / 5)

Overall overall rating: 4.9 Stars (4.9 / 5)

Where to buy: Amazon

If you’ve been looking for the best lightweight cart bag, then definitely check out this model from Titleist. It comes from one of the top brands in the industry and is packed with features.

What we like about this one:

  • weighs just 5.7 pounds
  • durable construction
  • 14-way divider system
  • lots of pockets (10 zippered pockets)
  • works well with a pull cart or motorized cart
  • padded sling and easy-lift handles
  • pockets are accessible when bag is on the cart

Probably the biggest benefit to this one is that it is one of the lightest golf cart bags on the market right now. The material and construction is very durable and I love the 14-way divider system to keep the clubs separate. And moving it from the car trunk to the cart is very easy to do.

Check Price on Amazon

What we don’t like about this one:

  • only three full-length dividers

My biggest complaint here is that the dividers are not 14 full-length ones. For this 2016 model, Titleist only offers the full-length divider in the regular Titleist Deluxe Cart Bag model instead of the lightweight one. So, you’d have to buy it and it weighs 1.1 pounds more than this one, which isn’t worth it in my opinion.

Here we have another great option from one of the top brands in the industry. And at the time of this review, both the 2015 and the 2016 versions are available at great prices.

What we like about this one:

  • 14-way full length divider system
  • two insulated cooler pockets
  • e-trolley base system for easy use with push carts
  • 12 total pockets
  • rain hood included
  • several color options available
  • weighs just 5.6 pounds

As you can see, this thing has a LOT to offer for the money. From the 14 full length dividers to the two insulated cooler pockets for beverages – this one truly has everything that you could ask for in an awesome golf cart bag. Plus, it has a very affordable price! Of course, if you enjoy throwing back a cold one on the course, then we think you’ll agree that this is the best golf bag for beer drinkers – those two insulated beverage cooler pockets are perfect for that six pack!

It’s also worth noting that the 2016 version has updated pockets and an updated strap system, so we suggest going with it over the 2015 version.

Check Price on Amazon

What we don’t like about this one:

  • 2016 version weighs more than the 2015 version

One of the really great things about the 2015 Callaway Org 14 bag is that it weighs under 5 pounds, however the updated 2016 version clocks in it at around 5.6 pounds when empty. Sure, that isn’t even a full pound of difference in weight, but I like to go with the most lightweight option that I can find and I really hate that the 2016 edition of this one weighs a little more than the older version.

Best Hybrid Golf Bag

TaylorMade Supreme Hybrid Stand Bag Review

TaylorMade Supreme Hybrid Stand Bag
Our ratings:
Weight: 5.0 Stars (5.0 / 5) Value: 5.0 Stars (5.0 / 5) Features: 4.8 Stars (4.8 / 5)

Overall overall rating: 4.9 Stars (4.9 / 5)

Where to buy: Amazon

If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, then a good hybrid golf bag makes sense for you. With this TaylorMade model, you get the convenience of a stand bag with the features of a carry and cart bag – all at a good low price.

What we like about this one:

  • 14-way top divider system
  • several color options available
  • durable crush-resistant construction
  • four full-length dividers
  • padded ergonomic shoulder strap system
  • 10 pockets
  • rain hood included
  • base is cart compatible

As you can see, this one is loaded with great features. It’s easy to use with a cart, but if you decide to carry it then you’ve got that nicely padded strap to ease the burden. I love that it has so many pockets, including a beverage cooler pocket.

Check Price on Amazon

What we don’t like about this one:

  • weighs 5.7 pounds
  • only four full-length dividers
  • beverage cooler pocket is small

My biggest complaint with this one is the weight. Man, is it heavy for a hybrid bag! Luckily, it is easy to use with a cart, but you might regret this one if you do a lot of walking with it (just something to keep in mind). I also hate that it only has four full-length dividers and that the beverage cooler pocket can’t hold more cans in there.

Taking Care Of Your Golf Bag

As you take your bag out onto the course, it will get a little dirty. Fortunately, taking care of it is pretty simple. If you end up with pollen, dirt, or other debris on the exterior, just use a damp cloth and a bristle brush to clean it up. If you leave something wet in one of the pockets, you can use a water and vinegar solution to clean out the mold and mildew. Just try to always remove wet stuff from the pockets and leave it open to air dry to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

At home, it is best to store your gear in a closet to reduce the amount of dust particles that can settle on it. Additionally, you should cover it with the rain cover or a towel (or other covering) to further reduce the chance of any dust particles ending up on the exterior surface. Also ensure that you do not leave the bag sitting out in the sun at home because the sun’s rays will actually break down the fabric and shorten the lifespan of the golf bag.
