What Are Callaway Golf Clubs and How Do They Work?
Callaway Golf Company manufactures high-end golf equipment and accessories, including golf clubs, golf bags, golf balls, shirts, hats, golf pants and shorts, golf shoes, rangefinders, and everything else you might need to play a good game of golf.
(That’s Callaway with three As, not Calloway as you might be tempted to spell it!)
Callaway has three other brands they sell golf equipment under, the Odyssey putter brand, Strata, and Ben Hogan.
Ely Callaway Jr., who used to be the president of Burlington Industries, a textile company, is the namesake of Callaway Golf Company. He was an avid golfer and bought 50% of the failing Hickory Sticks USA golf company in 1982.
This company was initially rebranded as Callaway Hickory Stick USA, and fully became named Callaway in 1988, four years after Ely Callaway bought the remaining shares of the company for a total of $400,000.
Callaway has been hugely successful since its transformation from Hickory Stick. Between 1992 and 1997, it has increased its market capitalization from $250 million to more than $3 billion after being listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
What Types of Golf Clubs Does Callaway Sell?

What Makes Callaway Golf Clubs Unique?
It might be easy to say it is just the quality of the club, but here are some reasons Callaway is unique as shared by some customers:
1. The Equipment Is the Best
Of course, if you are going to spend a lot of money on a golf club, you want to be sure it is worth it. And Callaway has the quality to meet the price.
2. Lots of Left Handed Clubs
If you are a left handed person, you probably know how frustrating it is to find golf equipment for lefties. Callaway has a great selection of clubs and other accessories for people who are left handed.
3. Callaway Community
Fans of Callaway feel that the company loves golf and values their customers. Representatives are friendly and want to talk to you, not ignore you. There is a sense of excitement and community that permeates the company.
“Every single person at Callaway is happy and genuinely seems to love what they do,” writes one customer. “That happiness is contagious. I think this starts at the top and flows down through the entire company.”
4. Excellent Customer Service
The Callaway Golf Company is known for its excellent, superior customer service. If you have a problem, such as a club breaking, you will be taken care of by Callaway without a lot of arguing or complaining by the Callaway team.
Some people say that Callaway has the best customer service in the entire golfing industry.
The Better Business Bureau of San Diego even recognized Callaway with the Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics on December 8, 2005.
If you get golf clubs directly from the Callaway website, you won’t get the best deals, but you will know you are getting authentic Callaway golf clubs.
Their “fairway woods” start at no more than $200 for a Women’s Steelhead XR Fairway Woods golf club. The GBB Epic Star Fairway Woods are the most expensive in their line of woods.
Callaway’s basic Rogue Irons start at $112.50 for single golf clubs and $899.99 for a set of iron clubs. Their Epic Pro irons start at $250 for singles, the sets of these elite clubs start at $2,000. Going a step above that, you can get Epic Star Irons for $300 per single golf club and $2,400 (starting price) for the set.
Hybrids are like a cross between a wood and an iron. Callaway’s Rogue Hybrids starts at $249.99.
Callaway also offers a variety of wedges, including their Mack Daddy Forged Slate Wedges, Mack Daddy Forged Chrome Wedges, and Mack Daddy 4 Callaway Customs Wedges, all starting at $149.99.
Getting an entire set of Callaway clubs may be the most cost-effective approach. With their Strata line of clubs, you can get an 18-piece men’s set starting at $499.99.
- Driver: Full titanium driver gives you a large sweet spot and more forgiveness to bomb it off the tee
- Fairway Woods: Very forgiving 3-wood and 5-wood built for long, high flying shots in a more aerodynamic head shape
- Hybrids give great alternatives to long irons, so you can play with more confidence on a variety of shots and these...
Public Perception (Other Callaway Golf Clubs Reviews)
The general perception of Callaway golf clubs is that they are some of the best clubs you can buy.
One review of the Callaway Golf 2018 Men’s Rogue Fairway Wood was pretty succinct: “The only thing I Can say is WOW.”
As we already mentioned, Callaway gets consistent 5-star reviews for their superior customer service. It is this one thing that truly sets Callaway apart and gets them golf fans for life.
Once in a while, you will find a bad review of a set of Callaway golf clubs. However, people are so loyal to Callaway, a poor review will often receive charges of fake reviewing on behalf of other golfing companies.
How It Compares
All golf club companies try to come up with innovative technologies – or at least exciting marketing buzz words – to try to distinguish their golf clubs from everyone else’s.
In 2018, Callaway has launched some clubs with some of this new technology. With their Rogue fairway wood line, they have a new feature called “Jailbreak Technology,” straight from the Callaway R&D department.
What exactly is “Jailbreak Technology”?
This is the inclusion of two vertical “jailbreak bars” designed to create stiffness in the body of the club. (Ostensibly, the term “jailbreak bars” refers to the fact that there are two vertical bars with a space between them, as if someone had removed a bar to break out of jail.)
The idea behind this design feature is that more impact load will be put upon the face of the club. This will hopefully increase the speed of the ball as well as the distance it flies.
What We Think
We think that if you have the budget for Callaway golf clubs, then go for it. You will get some of the best clubs on the market that will improve your game and have longevity.
Despite the claims to new and better technology with the latest versions of Callaway golf clubs, do not worry about having to upgrade your drivers, irons, or woods each year. While there might be a slightly perceptible difference in how the club feels or reacts, it probably will not change your golf game that much.
Unless you are super wealthy and can afford to upgrade your Callaway golf clubs each time a new and exciting version comes out, plan on keeping your Callaway clubs for a while. You should see a purchase of their premiere golf clubs and sets as a long-term investment in your golf game.
And, let’s face it. If you do use your golf time to network and make deals for business purposes, you do not want to be seen on the golf course with the cheapest no-name brand of golf clubs and accessories. Does this mean you need to have the most expensive Callaway clubs you can find along with a set of top end Titleist golf balls in your bag?
No. In fact, you do not want to overdo it with the expensive golf equipment, lest you end up looking like a golf wannabe. If you cannot back up your super expensive equipment with a low golf score then you may end up just looking like a fool.
Coupons and Deals
You can find some good deals on Callaway clubs online and sometimes in your local golf store. If you can support your local golf shop, it’s a good idea, as local stores offer an additional level of community that you cannot get on the Internet. You can also get help from the staff on choosing the proper set of Callaway golf clubs for your budget, height, and golf swing.
If you purchase a set of golf clubs from Callaway online site unseen, you could potentially be getting clubs that, while high in quality, just aren’t right for you.
That said, sometimes the lure of the amazing online deal is just too much, and you will want to take your chances on an online purchase of Callaway golf clubs.
Here are some places to get Callaway golf clubs at a discount on the Internet:
1. Official Callaway Website Clearance Section
You might not find a lot of stuff at the official Callaway website clearance section. But, if you check up on the page once in a while, you might see something worthwhile.
Currently, the Callaway website is offering two golf sets for children, one for boys ages 9 through 12, the XJ Hot series, starting from $299.99, and a girl’s golf club set (ages 9 through 12) in the same series (XJ Hot) also starting from $299.99.
2. Callaway Certified Pre-Owned Website
This is a great way to get high quality Callaway golf clubs at a lower price. These are certified “pre-owned” clubs guaranteed by Callaway.
Pre-owned, of course, is a fancy way of saying “used.” This term was not in use much at all prior to the 1990s, but then became a way for automotive sales companies to get past the stigma of the shady used car lot.
However, pre-owned means a little bit more than “used.” A used club, which you might find for sale at your local golf shop, is just that – used. It has probably not been inspected or rigorously tested prior to going on sale, especially by the company who made the club.
A certified pre-owned item for sale has most likely been through a comprehensive testing and inspection, as well as a cleaning up, by the company who owns the brand.
This is the 10-point inspection process used in verifying the integrity of Callaway pre-owned golf clubs:
- Structural integrity of head
- Cosmetic evaluation / clean-up
- Proper length
- Proper loft
- Serial number authentication
- Structural integrity of shaft
- Grip replacement
- Proper lie
- Proper swing-weight
- Field test
Now, the website does not specify exactly what they mean by “proper loft” or “proper lie” – the exact numeric guidelines aren’t published, however, we can assume that this is because each individual club would have its own ideal range of numbers. And, to put that all on the website would probably require a complicated database interface.
These clubs come with a certificate of authenticity and a 12-month warranty. You also get a free headcover with purchase.

Further, the golf clubs can accommodate golfers who are lefties as they offer a wide selection of clubs and other accessories for left-handed golfers. Moreover, Callaway has good customer service. Their representatives are friendly and will surely not ignore you. Overall, we give the Callaway golf clubs 4.3 out of 5 stars.
