What Is A Sunday Golf Bag? And What’s The Best Sunday Golf Bag?

One of the benefits of playing the game of golf is getting the physical exercise in walking a 9 or 18-hole course.  But when lugging a heavy golf bag complete with gear, golf clubs, and balls, walking a course can become a less than a favorable option because of the weight being carried and stress caused to the shoulders and back. With one of the standard golf bags – thanks to all of the dividers, pockets, umbrella strap, and other options – you end up lugging around something that is just overloaded with items that most golfers simply don’t use in an average game.

Although many U.S. golf courses today require a cart to be used, in the chance that the course can be walked, which many golfers still prefer to do, the Sunday golf bag is starting to become more of a common sight. These are specifically designed for the purpose of lightening the golfer’s load by taking only the bare necessities for what is needed to play a round of golf.

Quick Answer: Best Sunday Golf Bags

  1. Callaway Golf 2017 Hyper Lite 1 Pencil Sunday Bag
  2. Ping Moonlite Bag Carry/Sunday Golf Bag
  3. Titleist Premium Carry Golf Bag
  4. Oakley Men’s Fairway Golf Carry Bag
  5. Cobra 2017 Ultralite Golf Bag

Why Use One Of These?

The Sunday bag is typically a very lightweight material that can be compressed and folded down to fit into a smaller space. The average weight of one of these is between 2 to 4 pounds when it is empty and with no stand included.  Many Sunday bags are constructed to be laid down on the grass or propped up against a tree although a stand can be separately purchased for those that do not come with one included. The bag usually has only one strap to carry on your shoulder but if two are preferred, a few styles do come with two. These bags tend to have 2-3 zipper and mesh pockets just as a regular bag does but a big difference is that the Sunday bag does not contain a divider system for your clubs, self-standing legs, and cooler pockets.  The average price of one of these is right around $50.00 without a stand.

Many golfers like to keep one of these bags in the trunk of their vehicle as an option to have on hand at all times. Y’know, just in case of being invited to play a quick round or to use when going to the golf range to practice. Another advantage of the Sunday bag is when traveling to golf courses or abroad, the weight of the bag and clubs make it ideal to be compact but able to bring along on a trip.

With every pro, there’s a con. One of the main complaints about the Sunday bag is that if the bag is sat down in wet grass, the bottom of the bag will get wet and soiled. The other complaint is because it is meant to only carry a few clubs, six to nine, the clubs tend to swing around in the bag itself because of no divider section included with the bag.

I think you will agree that these things are undeniably a great option if you are just starting out learning the game or if you are a mature player who wants to have the bag in addition to a regular bag.

Our Favorites: Top Sunday Golf Bags

After taking some time to check out all of the models that are currently on the market, we found a few options that we really like. There are really just two main types here – the ones that have a stand and the ones that don’t. Personally, I am more of a fan of those with a stand because you really don’t want to be laying everything down on the ground. Additionally, you’ll find that some models are collapsible and some are not, but that is really a big deal to us. I can only see this being important if you don’t have a lot of space in your vehicle or if you live in a small apartment or condo and don’t want something bulky taking up a lot of space. But no matter what best meets your needs, I think you will be really pleased with the cost of these since the are much more affordable than your standard golf bag. So, if you’ve been shopping around for the best Sunday golf bag for the money, then check out our favorites here at Where’s My Caddie.

Knight Pitch and Putt Golf Lightweight Stand Carry Bag Review

Our Overall Rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

If you want something that is just very basic, this then model from Knight is a good choice for you. It has a good price and seems rugged enough for regular use. Of course, it’s not the best option available, but I think it has a lot to offer people who don’t mind the limitations that it has compared to other models. Especially if you are shopping based on cost because this one offers a good value for the money.

What we like about this one:

  • low price
  • comes with a stand
  • durable build
  • weighs two pounds
  • single-strap for shoulder carrying
  • several colors available

One of the best things about the Knight Pitch and Putt Golf Lightweight Stand Carry Bag is that the strap is a single strap for your shoulder instead of the more common double-strap backpack style. If you’ve already been shopping around for these, then you know exactly what I’m talking about here.

If you’re shopping for something with a bit more color to it, then you’ll really like what’s on offer here. Sure, you can go with the classic black but there are also green, blue, orange, and purple options available for golfers. And if you’re trying to get your kids or your lady to hit a few rounds with you, then one of the more colorful models just might do the trick.

What we don’t like about this one:

  • limited space
  • no travel cover
  • only one pocket
  • not much padding on the shoulder strap

Probably the biggest negative about this one is that you can only fit around six clubs in it. Granted, if you’re only playing something like a par 3 course, then this is really all the space that you need. But if you intend on taking all of your clubs out with you, then this bag is not for you.

If you intend on traveling with your clubs, then you’ll be disappointed to know that you don’t get a travel cover with this one. Sure, you might be able to buy something that fits it, but it would be nice if it just came with one.

Additionally, there is only one accessory pocket for your cell phone, keys, and other items. Ideally, I’d like to have something with more than one pocket, but this single pocket design won’t be a deal-breaker for everyone.

If you’ve had any other bags with a shoulder strap, then you will immediately notice that the strap on this one is not nearly as padded as you’re used to. However, since this one doesn’t hold a full set of clubs, you don’t really need as much padding as you might if you could carry all the clubs. Still though, it might not be comfortable enough for some golfers.

Ping Moonlite Carry Bag 2018 Carry/Sunday Golf Bag Review

Our Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

If you prefer to carry all of your clubs in your Sunday bag, then you should definitely check out this model from Ping. It manages to remain lightweight while offering enough space for all of your clubs, which is very impressive. And I still think that it manages to maintain an affordable cost based on all the benefits that it offer golfers like you.

What we like about this one:

  • holds a full set of clubs
  • has three pockets
  • belly is water resistant
  • weighs under 2.5 pounds
  • padded shoulder straps
  • several colors available
  • durable build

As you can see, there is a lot to like about this one. Probably the most important thing to know about it is that you can fit all of your clubs! And if you are juggling a lot of small items, then you will love all of the accessory pockets on this thing. There’s even a place for your water bottle and your umbrella. One of the really impressive things here is that it has all these extra features and still manages to remain lightweight – it weight just a tiny bit more than the Knight model listed above.

What we don’t like about this one:

  • no stand
  • no travel cover
  • backpack-style shoulder straps
  • not ideal for use with a golf cart

Like so many of these bags in this price range, you don’t get a travel or rain cover. I know that this isn’t a big deal for a lot of people out there, but I still think it would be a nice addition. I mean, how many times have you been playing when it’s started to rain – I know those of you in Florida know what I’m talking about here!

Probably my biggest complaint here is that there is no stand with it! Granted, the bag itself is durable and holds its shape, but it cannot stand on its own. To make matters worse, I don’t recommend that you carry this one if you’ll be using a golf cart as it is too bulky for that.

Finally, this one has the double straps that are designed to be worn like a backpack. Some people like this style and some people hate it. Personally, I am no fan of this style of straps cause I don’t wanna be wearing my golf clubs like a backpack! However, I still say that it is easier on your back if you are prone to back pain.

Callaway Golf Hyper-Lite 1 Pencil Bag Review

Our Overall Rating: 4.9 out of 5 stars (4.9 / 5)

If you prefer to stick with one of the trusted brands in the industry, then I think you will really like this one from Callaway. It’s got that sleek, classic look and feel to it. And I love that you can fit all of your clubs. Plus, this seems to be the most rugged of all the bags that I’ve checked out.

What we like about this one:

  • holds a full set of clubs
  • has three zippered pockets
  • valuables pocket that is water resistant
  • weighs only 1.9 pounds
  • padded shoulder straps
  • 3-way divider system for clubs
  • durable build

Ideally, I would like for my entire bag to be water-resistant, but I think I’m okay with just the valuables pocket having that feature. This way I know that my iPhone stays dry if I get caught out in a rain shower.

I think this one is the most lightweight of all the models that I checked out, and that is definitely a nice benefit cause the clubs are heavy enough on their own! And since you can fit the full set in this one, you need all the weight-saving that you can get. Another nice thing here is that the 3-way divider system makes it easy for you to pull out the right club every single time. You’d be amazed how much that matters after playing a round with a bag that did not have this feature.

There are plenty of pockets here, including a pocket for your water bottle. I also want to point out that one of the pockets is a full-sized apparel pocket. That doesn’t really matter so much to me, but I play with a couple of guys who love that feature.

It seems like the straps on this one have more padding that what I’ve seen with the others. Sure, it could just be my perception, but I think you should check it out if good shoulder strap padding is important to you.

What we don’t like about this one:

  • no travel cover
  • backpack-style shoulder straps

Again we have those backpack-style straps on this one. I get that this style makes it easier on your back, but I am still not really a fan of wearing bags like this. Sure, this is really a small complaint and I still really enjoy using this one, but I would like it even more if there was a single shoulder strap instead of the double backpack one.

You would really think that with a big brand like Callaway that this thing would come with a rain cover or a travel cover. Nope. I can only assume that the cost of this one is what prevents it from coming with a cover since I’ve seen more expensive models that do include a cover. If this is a big deal to you, then you can probably just get a separate cover for it, or just cross your fingers like me that you don’t end up out in in the rain with it!

As expected, there is no stand included – probably because those backpack straps mean that you’re supposed to just use them, I guess. I’ve heard from other golfers that Callaway (and some other brands) sell what are considered replacement parts where you can get a stand to use with this one. Supposedly some companies offer stands as an accessory part, too, but I haven’t had a chance to look into that myself. But again, this may not be a deal-breaker for you and it’s really just a minor gripe for me since I still really like this one.
